The politics of linguistic imperialism in Uganda

The linguistic environment in Uganda is not rosy but a bumpy one for most Ugandan languages. A few ‘exotic’ languages have been propagated at the expense of the majority. Uganda is one of the many? countries where linguistic survival is a nightmare. Most languages and cultures are endangered and are at the verge of death. As predicted by UNESCO, most of Uganda’s living languages may not live to see their 2100th birthday. UNESCO predicts that nearly half of the world’s living languages may be extinct within this century or the beginning of the next century.
